Background of the Study

Adolescent sexual health education is a crucial component of public health interventions aimed at reducing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people. With increasing cases of STIs, including HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, there is a need for comprehensive sex education that equips adolescents with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual health (WHO, 2024). Research indicates that well-designed sexual health programs can significantly reduce risky sexual behaviors and STI prevalence among adolescents (Adepoju & Salami, 2024).

In Sokoto State, limited access to sexual health education and cultural taboos surrounding discussions on sexuality contribute to high STI rates among adolescents. Despite efforts to introduce sexual health education, its effectiveness in STI prevention remains largely unexplored. This study evaluates the impact of adolescent sexual health education on STI prevention in Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

Adolescents in Sokoto State face significant challenges in accessing accurate sexual health information. Many receive inadequate or misleading information from peers, media, or cultural narratives, increasing their vulnerability to STIs (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). The absence of structured sexual health education programs in schools further exacerbates the problem.

This study examines the role of adolescent sexual health education in reducing STI prevalence, identifying the factors that influence its effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of sexual health awareness among adolescents in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of sexual health education on STI prevention.
  3. To identify barriers to effective sexual health education.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of sexual health awareness among adolescents in Sokoto State?
  2. How does sexual health education influence STI prevention among adolescents?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the implementation of sexual health education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sexual health education has no significant impact on STI prevention.
  2. There is no significant relationship between sexual health awareness and STI prevalence.
  3. Barriers to sexual health education do not significantly affect program effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on secondary schools in Sokoto State, evaluating the role of sexual health education in STI prevention. Limitations include cultural sensitivity and reluctance to discuss sexual health topics.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sexual Health Education: The process of providing information about sexual health, relationships, and STI prevention.
  • STI Prevention: Strategies aimed at reducing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
